image as language

“Who am I if I’m not you?”

Color and form as a metaphor, an allegory in tones. A visual analog to the causation and bounds of our (patriarchal) society and visual attempts at the understanding of the psychic landscape in development.

Concepts based on dreams, personal experiences and personality conflicts between the authentic self, taught mannerism and projected morality.

Martine Johanna’s practice revolves around the activity of painting, drawing and writing. She was born and raised in Gelderland, Netherlands and has studied at ArtEZ the Academy of fine Arts in Arnhem, obtaining a bachelors degree and a Masters degree. She has exhibited in multiple Solo shows in the Netherlands, Europe and the United States. Her work is part of several private collections and has been published in diverse books and magazines. Her paintings were also featured in two episodes of the HBO hit series True Detective.

"The last thing I wanted was infinite security and to be the place an arrow shoots off from. I wanted change and excitement and to shoot off in all directions myself, like the colored arrows from a Fourth of July rocket."
(From The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath)
