But as many others that want to discover the world from a place of curiosity, in my teens I was met with the consequences of my gender and my impulsive nature. Growing up felt like becoming a construct of myself and the expectations of my family, local society and general society through media and religious beliefs. Like the mythological Chimera, I felt like a collage of sorts.The limitations and double standart in my personal situation left me frustrated, never fully being taken seriously, my ambitions, spirit and dreams tempered. Having to accept responsibility whenever something bad happened to me. And going through the pain, guilt, confusion and shame of those things by myself. It was a big rift from my brothers childhood experience. And my sister had long left the house to experience more freedom.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; So it came to be that, whenever I felt overwhelmed, misunderstood, or not believed or supported, I chose to retreat and escape through drawing, painting, dancing, reading cheap dime novels, fashion magazines full off wonderfully dressed strong women, ghost stories, otherworldy adventures and watching any film outside of the dull and restrictive. Much like the screens and social media channels of today, these outlets provided an escape into an illusive and ethereal world where anything seemed possible, filled with dark entities, space ships, fairytale castles and savior princes. Before my teens I remember a more magical time, with the rainbow colors of the plastic fly curtains at the kitchen door, the bright pastel tupperware, Barbie adds and plastic toys and prismatic reflections of water in a baby bath in the yard. The grass freshly mown by my father. The laughter of my twin brother when we would play outside with all our stuffed toys, playing Star Trek with them as crewmembers. The color sceme of those memories lies like a softening blanket over my work, it’s effect gratifying and inviting. Like a life to come rooted in innocense, full of wonder and imagination.Realizing that although I went through my feelings solitary, there must be so many women out there that have had similar experiences and no one to relate to. The female figures in my paintings are my kinfolk, and my drawings are reflections of heroins of femalehood, retreating in themselves without losing their footing. Facing adventure whilst in their composure, playfully establishing their own gender driven identities and romantic inclinations and no longer trying to fit into the world around them. Without the ever looming risk and fear of judgement or harm. "The last thing I wanted was infinite security and to be the place an arrow shoots off from. ContemporaryLos Angeles, USA Martine Johanna’s ghosts are overwhelmingly female hauntings, emphasized and lamented in the artist’s solo exhibition A Particular Ghost at Hashimoto Contemporary, Los Angeles. The figures in Johanna’s paintings and drawings embody restless, ghostly fragments, illustrating how women's pleasure is entwined with the symbolic death of societal acceptance. Using rich greens and pinks or electric blues and yellows, the Dutch artist depicts these women confronting the viewer in ecstasy or turning inward to grieve the lack of mental freedom in the moments after. Throughout this entrancing series of works, the artist weaves a compelling narrative linking social ostracization to orgasmic pleasure and safety, expanding the idiom “small death.”Each new painting peeks into Johanna’s private world, where she grapples with women’s hypervisibility and invisibility. Though it’s difficult not to stare at the women in explicitly sexual positions, the figures don’t return the same fascinated gaze, looking through the viewer as though our presence is inconsequential. The artist also captures quiet moments with visible tension through imagined scenes like disembodied ghosts. Depicted as floating architecture enveloped by ethereal fog or precious gems hovering inside an aurora, the synthesis of women’s bodies and haunted landscapes evoke the many ways women are made invisible: silence, omission, force. Bearing titles like A Round Object Has No Sharp Edge and A Ritual for a Small Death, the works in this exhibition aptly display society's double bind of harm and intimacy, of sexuality and humiliation. The emotional aspects of these works stems from Johanna's own emotional transformation as she confronts her discomfort around the women she paints, instilled by her religious upbringing. In publicizing these feelings, the artist entrusts her discomfort to someone else, releasing her female specters from the safety of her mind into the danger of reality. As such, each artwork holds a prayer for these ghosts to ensure a safe passage to another realm. Her heroines visibly grapple with the weight and tension of the expectations that society has placed on them. The figures’ internal dilemmas, made visible through concentrated facial expressions and calculated postures, spill into their surroundings, manifesting in rainbows, fractured and hemorrhaging color fields, and even levitating objects.The artist’s focus on the interior thoughts and struggles of her subjects are depicted here through the relationship between the figure and interior setting and objects. A symbolic house of that explores the mental fluctuations of an archetypical female roaming a predominantly male infrastructure, whilst trying to observantly experience her own narratives within the social fabric she is part of. The painterly works, often on linen and panels, are made with acrylic in an optimistic prismatic color spectrum, reminiscent of Fauvism and carry the atmosphere of Mid Century idealism. Cut-throughs and light prisms distort the environment of the female protagonists in elucidating dynamic surreal compositions, making an exploratory play between abstraction and narrative depiction.” *Text Massey Klein Gallery New York Martine Johanna studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Arnhem, Netherlands, where she completed both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree.
