Twin coves beach

Through fractured and hemorrhaging color fields, levitating objects and deformed furnishings aims focus on the interior thoughts and struggles of her subjects. The works lean more towards shifting and fluctuating emotional states, the surroundings are glitched, cut-through, distorted and often dreamlike, not fully landscapes but hints of a self created arena. Like the chimera, these aspects representing puzzle parts of one being.

The works in Balancing Act are vibrant and unsettled. Her heroines visibly grapple with the weight and tension of the expectations that society has placed on them. The figures’ internal dilemmas, made visible through concentrated facial expressions and calculated postures, spill into their surroundings, manifesting in rainbows, fractured and hemorrhaging color fields, and even levitating objects.

The artist’s focus on the interior thoughts and struggles of her subjects are depicted here through the relationship between the figure and interior setting and objects. One subject poses with a bowling ball on her head; in another, she uses her powerful gaze to suspend the object. Johanna pays special attention to commonplace domestic items.

The Dark House of Gloria
Hashimoto Contemporary
April 2021
Solo exhibition
San Francisco

The fictitious environment of The Dark House of Gloria the artist has created is a place “where an uncontrollable amount of love and optimism collides with the harsh light of life experiences and its destructive effects.” Each of Johanna’s figures ricochet among opposing emotions - escapism and stasis, ferocity and vulnerability, intensity and tenderness.
