2025/26
AOA;87 Berlin, presents the solo exhibition “Galatea Will Freiheit” by Dutch artist Martine Johanna. The exhibition intertwines perceptions of ancient Greek mythology with contemporary themes of strength, poetry, escapism, and dark humor. Painted like living sculptures some figures are infused with dark humor—irony and wit manifesting in floating heads, referencing the beheading of Medusa. This nods to the ways in which women, influenced by male-dominated perspectives, often judge one another. It is an open exploration and modern interpretation of mythology, contemporary life, and individual experience, all merging into a surreal world where power carries both an internal and external dimension.
At its core, this collection of works exists within the tension of a reality where the limits of female strength are constantly redefined and challenged. And a reflection on the myths we carry within us, the beauty in our imperfections, and the seductive power of dreams that steal our sleep.
Works from this exhibition amongside new works are included in the exhibition at MOYA Museum of young art, exhibition from September 2025 to April 2026
